If I think about organisations that runs challenging programmes and projects that we should all be able to learn from there is always one that comes to the top of my list, and it’s NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).
As a body they are not only at the bleeding edge of technology but diverse in the range of programmes and projects they execute and the challenges they face and overcome. They include large and small manufacturing, IT infrastructure, control systems, software development, construction design and build, maintenance, research & development etc….
The NASA Academy of Program/Project and Engineering Leadership (APPEL) run an annual “Project Management Challenge” event where a great deal of information and learning is shared. Unfortunately this is an internal NASA training meeting so we can’t get a look in, however they do share the presentation materials on the web.
Project Management Challenge has archive presentations from the events 2004 through to 2009, many of which also have podcasts. The range of materials is diverse with some being quite “spacey” whilst others focus on soft skills, risk, governance, failure and success.
As a drop in reference point I think it is well worth a visit.
