Guest Blogger – What do Project Managers need to know about Social Media?

As Project Management professionals we all know that change is part of business life. If this were not the case then most of us would be out of work, “Projects are the means by which we introduce change”. The key to understanding how Project Management has changed, or can change, is to understand how technology has evolved and how we can better utilize it. But remember, we aren’t re-writing a methodology, we are simply embracing those applicable tools available to us and blending them into our existing work life and processes.

- Social media like Twitter are fast finding their way as a necessity for project managers and business personnel alike. But are you using these tools efficiently enough?
Project Management is a classic example of a function that requires collaboration and information sharing at the highest level. Looking at how Document Management, Communication and Collaboration have evolved over the last few years, and adding to that the whole Social Media explosion, we are presented with an array of tools that can enhance the way we work. To qualify this, more and more companies are implementing collaborative social tools as they can justify the benefit, if you’re not familiar with social media then how can you work on a project that is implementing the concept, let alone one that may be using the tools already?
Looking at just one example of the contribution of a major player in this field, you can see just how much conviction there is surrounding Social Media in business.

If you’re still running your projects from your inbox then you need to take a long hard look at the entire concept, it isn’t just a fad, it’s evolution and needs to be embraced or you are likely to get left behind.

I’m sure Social Media has a part to play in effective project communications management but it shouldn’t cloud the reality that actually getting a project delivered is the most important part of how to manage a project
